McCollum: Trump 'broke the spirit of the Constitution'

Updated: October 02, 2019 10:48 PM

Just a week after an impeachment inquiry was launched by House Democrats, Congresswoman Betty McCollum hosted a town hall in Stillwater.

An auditorium at the high school was packed with people frustrated by the gridlock and political divide in Washington. Supporters and opponents of the impeachment proceedings spoke.

The Democratic lawmaker made it very clear she supports the inquiry, saying President Donald Trump "really broke the spirit of the Constitution" when he made the call to the Ukrainian President on July 25.

"I just have to speak the truth, the president spent a lot of time lying today," she said.

As for the attitude in Washington she said, "[there's] sadness we're even having to talk about impeaching a president and great sadness in some of my Republican colleagues who will say one thing in the elevator to me and then I'll see them on the local news or national news saying something quite different."

The Congresswoman answered questions from constituents about a number of other issues, including intellectual property rights, protecting the boundary waters and health care. McCollum specifically said she supports "Medicaid For All" because she believes it can be rolled out faster than "Medicare For All."

The Republican Party of Minnesota issued the following statement in response to the town hall:

"Congresswoman McCollum has been looking for any reason to attempt to impeach President Trump ever since she sponsored articles of impeachment 20 months ago. It is no surprise that McCollum is a leading supporter of the Democrats' recent baseless impeachment push after she fell short last time around. Tonight, McCollum should focus on listening to Minnesotans' questions on important issues like national security and trade rather another unsuccessful impeachment attempt."
