'Closed Until Further Notice' sign posted at Lakeland City Hall

Updated: September 13, 2019 06:28 PM

The small community of Lakeland has a sign written by the mayor in blue marker that reads 'Closed Until Further Notice' up on the door of city hall.

"Today is Lakeland's dysfunctional day. We have no staff, we can't conduct business anymore," said Mayor Richard Glasgow.

Lakeland is a community of around 1,700 residents on the banks of the St. Croix River in Washington County.

Lakeland’s City Council scheduled a meeting for Friday evening to address appointing an interim city clerk/administrator but the mayor won’t open the doors.

“It's an open meeting violation. I will not allow the city to get in litigation and be fined," said Glasgow.

The mayor says residents were not given enough notice about the council meeting.

"I think that's inaccurate and the city attorney has told him so,” said Joe Paiement, City Council member. “I’m very discouraged with him for not letting the City Council meet."

Mary Miller with the group Concerned Citizens of Lakeland hopes the city hall showdown catches more residents' attention.

"I would like to have a lot of people showing up at City Council meetings,” said Miller. “I think that will send the city a message that the government needs to be a partnership of everyone."

Mayor Glasgow said he will open city hall up on Tuesday evening for a different City Council meeting that had been announced, but not until then.

"It's the first time city hall has been without staff," said Glasgow.
