The State Patrol said three children were transported to North Memorial after an SUV crashed into a swing set on a playground in Bohanon Park in Minneapolis following a police chase Monday morning.

The incident report states 4-year-old Lillianna Lee Peltier and 2-year-old Kayden Jay Peltier suffered what were termed as life-threatening injuries. Konnor Jace Peltier, 3, has injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

"Oh they're all wonderful children. All of them," said their grandmother, Diana Peltier, on Monday afternoon.  "I hope the kids will be OK. They've got to be OK."

The driver of the vehicle, identified as 27-year-old Kabaar Wahleen Powell of Richfield, was also transported to North Memorial with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

A trooper attempted to pull the vehicle, a 1997 Ford Expedition, over for speeding on Interstate 94 shortly after 9:30 a.m. Monday when the driver fled. The driver, identified as Powell, exited Interstate 94 at 53rd Street and continued to flee on surface streets before crashing into a group of children.

State Patrol spokesperson Capt. Jason Bartell said earlier that the suspect attempted to flee his vehicle on foot, but was apprehended by two state troopers. Both troopers were said to have suffered minor injuries during the arrest. A gun was recovered in the suspect's vehicle.

The investigation remains active. Bartell did not believe the vehicle was stolen.

"There's a lot of stuff to figure out yet," Bartell said.

"To take them to the park and this happens to them? Oh lord. I just can't imagine," said Peltier before she left for the hospital to be with her grandkids.

A KSTP crew at the scene at 50th and Dupont avenues near Jenny Lind Elementary School captured video of the vehicle on the playground.
