A St. Paul man has been charged with assault after authorities say he attacked his teacher at Normandale Community College Wednesday.

Twenty-one-year-old Gavin Hutson faces one count of third-degree assault, two counts of misdemeanor fifth-degree assault and a gross misdemeanor charge of carrying a pistol without a permit, according to the Hennepin County Attorney's Office.

The attorney's office said Hutson was in a class at Normandale when his teacher, previously identified as a 51-year-old woman, asked him to stay after class to talk about an "inappropriate remark" he made to another student.

After class, Hutson allegedly hit her, knocking her unconscious. According to the attorney's office, a witness said Hutson continued punching the instructor after she fell to the ground.

That witness yelled for help, drawing another teacher into the classroom. The attorney's office said Hutson punched the second teacher, cutting his forehead.

Hutson allegedly pushed another student as he ran out of the school. Police found Hutson in a nearby parking ramp with blood on his hands and sleeves and arrested him.

The 51-year-old instructor suffered two broken bones in her face, the attorney's office said.

Hutson left his backpack in the classroom when he ran, and police found a loaded semi-automatic pistol with additional ammunition inside of it.

He is scheduled to appear in court Friday.
