Cell phone video captures fight lead to more than a dozen gunshots in Uptown

Cell phone footage captured a fight that boiled over into more than a dozen gunshots outside one Uptown apartment building.

The Minneapolis Police Department says the incident happened outside the Elan Apartments in the 2800 block of Emerson Avenue South.

"It was 10 p.m., I was just laying in bed," said Joe Richardson, who witnessed the gunshots from an apartment window.

Richardson says it started as an argument, but then he and his neighbor heard more than a dozen gunshots and recorded everything on a cell phone.

"I can't believe it's happening right outside," Richardson said. "Many shots, I could see the flash of the gun go off."

Just before 10:30 p.m., police arrived on scene outside the Elan Apartments. They say the people involved were gone, and they didn't find any victims.

"I didn't hear any screaming, didn't hear anybody saying anything, no ambulance," Richardson said.

Elan Apartments staff sent an email to residents, saying they don't believe anyone living at the building was involved. The apartment staff added, "while the safety and security of our residents is of the utmost importance, this seems to be a truly isolated incident."

Still, Richardson is a bit on edge and hopes some of this footage can help police catch those involved.

"I think this is such a safe neighborhood and for it to happen on a Sunday too, I just can't believe it," Richardson said.
