Brooklyn Park boy finds needle in toy from Elk River Walmart

It was a scary way to end a birthday party. Catie Lund said a bag of sports-themed hacky sacks was one of the party favors, and when her 7-year-old son opened one of them, there was a needle inside.

"It was rusty, it was like a very long sewing needle. We're not sure where it came from," she said.

What's worse: He got poked by it and it caused him to bleed. Now he is being tested for a host of communicable diseases as a precaution.

Lund said the party favor pack was sold at the Walmart in Elk River. A spokesperson for the chain said the products have been removed from the shelves at that location, and that staff inspected the other merchandise and didn't find anything suspicious.

But, Lund said some disturbing unknowns remain.

"We don't know if it was planted or if it was a manufacturer error. I don't want another parent or child to go through this," said Lund. "That's the scary part. You just don't know."

Lund said her son will have to go back to the doctor for blood tests in six weeks and again in twelve weeks.

The Elk River Police Department is following up on the case, and a spokesperson said they will check in-store surveillance video to see if the product may have been tampered with.
