The McLeod County Sheriff's Department has identified the man found dead in Winsted Lake Thursday.

The previous day, authorities received a report of a snowmobile possibly going into the water.

The number of snowmobile-related deaths in Minnesota has increased in recent years.  Below are the total number of fatalities resulting from snowmobile crashes in both Minnesota and Wisconsin over the past three winters.


The report was received at 6:33 p.m. Wednesday, and a release said the body of 52-year-old Lawrence Stifter of Winsted was recovered around 2:35 p.m. Thursday.

Stifter's cause of death is still under investigation.
