Bloomington Jefferson High School confirmed it was on lockdown due to an "isolated student altercation."

Bloomington police said two female students got into a dispute at about noon, and the dispute then escalated into a stabbing. One of the students was transported to a hospital in fair condition with multiple stab wounds, and the other was taken into custody. A knife was recovered from the suspect.

According to a statement from Bloomington Public Schools, the incident occurred just inside the main entrance of the school and lasted a few seconds before it was broken up by school security personnel and a school resource officer.

A number of students and staff were in the area of the incident and were able to give witness statements.

"They told us to go into this classroom and we didn't really know what happened," student Lauryn Raaen said. "It's really sad to hear something like that can happen like that."

The school says that there will be additional social workers and counselors Wednesday.

"This is a very rare occurrence in a Bloomington school," said Bloomington Police Chief Jeff Potts. "I haven't been to an incident like this. It's concerning not only to the school staff but all of the parents and everyone else. I'm sure we'll be having additional conversations to what the school can do and law enforcement's help to prevent things like this."

Police said the investigation into the incident remains active, and the school remains on lockdown.
