Each year, millions of dollars worth of beer is sold at the State Fair. It's one of the big reasons people come to the fair.

But it wasn't always this big. Beer sales have skyrocketed over the years.

And while you may not realize it, when you buy a beer at the fair, you are part of a big experiment.

The growing popularity has forced vendors to keep pace with each other, and that often means trying something new.

"This year, we actually announced 53 specialty beers and beverages that are brand new, and that's the most that we've ever announced. So, our vendors are just getting a lot more creative, working with the different breweries around Minnesota," said Danielle Dullinger, with the Minnesota State Fair.

Many likely experiment with the State Fair crowd.

State fair officials said, in 2000, beer sales totaled about $3 million; today, it's about $14 million.
