Authorities with the Princeton Police Department and the Mille Lacs County Sheriff's Office are investigating a "swatting" incident that took place Tuesday.

At about 1:13 p.m. Tuesday, authorities received a report of a male suspect in a residence who was threatening to hurt himself as well as law enforcement officials.

Authorities placed schools in the Princeton School District on a soft lockdown as a precaution. Authorities said there was no direct threat to any of the schools.

Upon investigation, authorities learned the suspect had given a false identity and address. The area authorities were investigating was cleared and deemed safe.

The incident of "swatting," or false reporting, remains under investigation. Authorities said such incidents are "incredibly dangerous and illegal."

The Princeton Fire Department, Princeton Public Works, Mille Lacs County Sheriff's Office, Sherburne County Sheriff's Office, Benton County Sheriff's Office, Milaca Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources assisted at the scene Tuesday.
