Authorities in Douglas County battled a fire at a side-by-side duplex in Miltona Friday afternoon.

A release from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said the blaze was first reported around 4:30 p.m. The renters of both apartments were not home at the time.

Upon arriving on scene, first responders discovered the fire was confined to one of the apartments. That apartment sustained extensive fire damage to the kitchen and attic, as well as smoke damage throughout the premises.

The residents of the fire-damaged apartment are being assisted by family members and the Red Cross, the release said.

The matter remains under investigation.
