Around Town: A look at this weekend's events

No plans this weekend? Need to get out of the house? Here is a look at what is going on in the Twin Cities this weekend.

Enjoy Winter Recreation 


Get out and enjoy recreational winter sports around the metro. Looking to speed downhill on skis or a snowboard? Hyland Hills, Afton Alps and Buck Hill may just be the place to go. Speeding downhill not your thing? Try out cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. Minnesotans can rent equipment for cross-country skiing or snowshoeing through Three Rivers Park District, Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and St. Paul parks and recreation

Excelsior Ice Castles 

Explore the frozen wonder of the Excelsior Ice Castles over the weekend. According to the organization that builds the creations, the Excelsior exhibit is one of six in the country. The castles include lit sculptures, frozen thrones, slides and more.

Minnesota Landscape Arboretum Passport to Spring 

Tired of winter? See what is in bloom at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum's Passport to Spring. This year's flower show includes nine displays that feature a different country and tell their stories through their flowers, according to event organizers. 

Date: Daily through March 3

Place: Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, Chaska 

Fire & Ice: 2019 Winter Carnival Art Show 

See what local artists are up to during the Fire &Ice: 2019 Winter Carnival Art Show. According to event organizers, the artists' works depict, "the powerful forces of winter battling the hopeful promises of spring." 

Date: Runs through Feb. 17

Place: AZ Gallery, St. Paul 

Mall of America Skate the Star 

Looking to lace up your ice skates over the weekend? Head over to the Mall of America for the opening weekend of the Skate the Star ice rink. The 12,000-square-foot ice rink is a new attraction to the Mall of America. All proceeds from the rink will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of the Twin Cities.

Date: Open daily through Feb. 18

Minneapolis Lake Home and Cabin Show 

Get excited for cabin season during the Minneapolis Lake Home and Cabin Show.  Attendees will be able to see the latest in cabin furniture and furnishings, sporting gear, marine equipment, landscaping and lakeshore maintenance and more. The show also includes a number of seminars and demonstrations.

Player Up Amateur Esports Tournament

Watch the top gamers battle it out over the weekend during Player Up Amateur Esports Tournament. According to organizers, players will compete for $10,000 in League of Legends, Fortnite, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Rocket League.

Minnesota State High School League Dance Team Tournament

Catch the state's top dance teams over the weekend during the Minnesota State High School League's dance team tournament. Teams from all three classes will be competing in the jazz competition Friday and the high kick competition Saturday.

612Brew Anniversary Party 

Celebrate six years of beer with 612Brew during the company's anniversary party. The celebration includes special beer releases, music and giveaways.

Monster Jam

Monster Jam is back in the Twin Cities. Attendees can get their fill of monster trucks as they take to the dirt at U.S. Bank Stadium Saturday night. The motorsport spectacle pits world-class drivers against each other in both monster truck racing and freestyle competitions.

Place: U.S. Bank Stadium, Minneapolis

Northeast Winter Market

Summer may be long gone, but you can still enjoy the atmosphere of a farmer's market. Pick up fresh produce and other foods during the Northeast Winter Market. The market also includes music on vinyl spun by local DJs, kids' activities and a bar.

Time: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Place: Chow Girls, Minneapolis 

Balkan Fest

Immerse yourself in the cultures of the Balkan peninsula during Balkan Fest at the Landmark Center. The event will include traditional music and dances from the peninsula, as well as booths from local Balkan communities.

Time: Noon to 5 p.m.

Place: Landmark Center, St. Paul
