Around Town: A look at this weekend's events

Enjoy Winter Recreation

Get out and enjoy recreational winter sports around the metro. Looking to speed downhill on skis or a snowboard? Hyland Hills, Afton Alps and Buck Hill may just be the place to go. Speeding downhill not your thing? Try out cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. Minnesotans can rent equipment for cross-country skiing or snowshoeing through Three Rivers Park District, Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and St. Paul Parks and Recreation


Excelsior Ice Castles 

Explore the frozen wonder of the Excelsior Ice Castles over the weekend. According to the organization that builds the creations, the Excelsior exhibit is one of six in the country. The castles include lit sculptures, frozen thrones, slides and more.

Minnesota Landscape Arboretum Passport to Spring 

Tired of winter? See what is in bloom at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum's Passport to Spring. This year's flower show includes nine displays that feature a different country and tell their stories through their flowers, according to event organizers. 

Date: Daily through March 3

Place: Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, Chaska 


Minneapolis Home and Garden Show 

The Minneapolis Home and Garden Show is set to return to the Minneapolis Convention for two weekends. This is the 85th year celebrating its operations. This year's event includes feature gardens, floral displays, customizable options for your home, deck wars and more. 

Date: Friday - Sunday

Place: Minneapolis Convention Center, Minneapolis 


Minnesota Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Association Winter Weekend 

Warm up over the weekend to the sound of banjos, fiddles, mandolins and more at the Minnesota Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Association's Winter Weekend. The event includes live performances, instrument workshops and informal jam sessions (so be sure to bring an instrument).

Dance Fest 2019

Learn about the competitive sport of ballroom dancing during Dance Fest 2019 at St. Paul's Union Depot. Along with competitions, dancers and spectators can build their skills during free seminars at the event.

First Saturday at the Walker

Enjoy the Walker Art Center for free on Saturday during the museum's First Saturday series. The event includes performances, games, art-making and kids' films for families.

Minneapolis Polar Plunge 

Take a chilly dip in Bde Maka Ska for a good cause Saturday during the Minneapolis Polar Plunge. Funds raised by plungers will go toward Special Olympics Minnesota.

Twin Cities Record Show

Find that LP or 45 you've been searching for during the Twin Cities Records Show. And the fun doesn't just stop at records. Vendors will also be selling CDs and music memorabilia. Attendees can also enjoy the hunt for that special record while enjoying one of the many brews from Able Seedhouse and Brewery. 

Date: Saturday

Time: Noon to 4 p.m.

Place: Able Seedhosue and Brewery


St. Anthony WinterFest

Head over to St. Anthony to embrace what seems like a never-ending winter during the St. Anthony WinterFest. Activities include a bags tournament, a candy scramble, a craft corner for kids, an obstacle course and a medallion hunt.

Time: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Place: Central Park Pavillion, St. Anthony


African Food Fest 

Explore the culinary traditions of Africa during the African Food Fest in Crystal. Those in attendance will have the opportunity to try food from Liberia, the Ivory Coast, South Sundan and more. Music and entertainment will also be included.

Time: Noon to 4 p.m.

Place: St. James Lutheran Church, Crystal
