It's been an extremely profitable past few weeks when it comes to the Powerball in one small northeastern Minnesota community.

The Minnesota State Lottery announced Monday that for the second time in three weeks a Powerball ticket purchased in Carlton matched the first five numbers drawn to win $1 million.

This time, it was a ticket sold at the Kwik Trip on Highway 210 that matched the first five numbers in Saturday's drawing.

The prize was claimed at MSL headquarters in Roseville Monday afternoon by Hibbing resident Emil Hakomaki, who, according to a release, said he was "touring around Gooseberry Falls" Saturday when he purchased the ticket.

Back on May 19, another ticket purchased at the Minit Mart in town also matched the first five numbers. That prize has yet to be claimed. Once a prize is claimed, the business that sold the ticket receives a $5,000 bonus.

Since the start of 2017, a total of seven $1 million tickets have been sold in the state. The largest winning Powerball ticket sold in Minnesota was worth $228.9 million. That ticket was sold in Lakeville in August, 2011.

Marie Hinton, a communications specialist with MSL, said she is not aware of two such tickets being sold so close together in so short a time.

However, she said the random nature of Powerball drawings makes it hard to calculate odds.

"There's just no way to figure that out because there's so many factors involved," Hinton said. "Every ticket is a random event. And when something is random, sometimes things like this can happen."

Powerball winners in Minnesota have one year from the date of the drawing to claim any prizes. The $1 million prizes must be claimed at the Minnesota Lottery's headquarters in Roseville.

In the meantime, Hinton doesn't know whether the recent hot streak will cause more people to make the trip to the city to buy tickets in hopes of striking it rich themselves.

"I guess we'll just have to see," she said.

The winning Powerball numbers for June 9 were 6-10-15-25-36 and the Powerball was 14.

The winning Powerball numbers for May 19 were 3-6-9-17-56 and the Powerball was 25.
