Anoka police were called to a home on the 1200 block of Fifth Avenue South at 10:46 a.m. Monday, Nov. 28, after a relative dropping off groceries found the man, who was identified as Al Loehlein. Police say Loehlein was pronounced dead at the scene.

"It's not going to bring Uncle Al back. No doubt about it. I mean, you know, as much as you want to see somebody get caught, I just keep thinking about Al and his last moments," said Loehlein's nephew, Bart Ward, about the arrest.

Loehlein was last seen alive by his family on Thanksgiving evening when they dropped him off at his home, police say.

Police say the home appeared to have been gone through, and someone reported seeing a man in the victim’s driveway on Saturday morning.

"This guy dodged a lot of bullets throughout his whole life and this ends up happening? It's unbelievable. It's not the way to go out," said Ward.

Thomas has a lengthy criminal history dating back more than a decade including felony burglaries, domestic abuse convictions and violating multiple no contact orders.
Thomas only lived half a mile away from Loehlein's home.

"This is particularly bad. It's gruesome... but I'm not surprised," said Ward. "The world is a dangerous place."

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS sent many questions over to the Anoka County Sheriff's Office asking if anyone else may have been involved in this crime and how law enforcement was able to ultimately make this arrest but was told no more details will be released in this investigation until the criminal complaint is filed on Friday.
