Alcohol-involved crash kills infant; three other children injured

The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating a fatal crash involving alcohol and unbelted occupants early Sunday morning.

At about 2:30 a.m., police and fire responded to a one-vehicle crash on I-94 under Dupont Avenue in Brooklyn Center. The driver, 25-year-old Hakeem Olajuwan Miller, was traveling north on Dupont and crashed his Ford Explorer into the barrier. The vehicle flipped over the fence and landed in the eastbound lanes of 94 below. The driver was under the influence of alcohol, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Along with the driver and 25-year-old passenger Sharonda Desinee McMorris, two boys, 9 and 5, and one girl, 9 — who were wearing seatbelts — were taken to North Memorial Health Hospital. None had life-threatening injuries.

However, a one-year-old boy died in the crash. It is unknown whether the adults or infant were belted.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

The driver has been booked into the Hennepin County Jail on probable cause criminal vehicular homicide.

Hennepin Emergency Medical Services, North Emergency Medical Services, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office and Brooklyn Center Police responded to the crash. The State Patrol is investigating.
