Two abandoned puppies were rescued by some good Samaritans in northern Minnesota Wednesday night.

The Cloquet Police Department wrote on Facebook the dogs were found in a box in Sather Park in Scanlon. The temperature outside was 14 degrees when they were found, police said.

"We have no suspects at this time and this type of animal cruelty is hard to comprehend but a sad reality we see," the department wrote. "There is no excuse to discard these helpless puppies who most likely would have had a fatal end if they were not found in time."

The puppies were taken to a vet and treated for low body temperatures. Their rescuers are caring for them until a permanent home is found, police said.

Anyone with information about the dogs is asked to call 911.
