5 INVESTIGATES: Born under suspicion

April 25, 2019 09:00 AM

A 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS investigation finds a Minnesota man, also a United States citizen and a veteran, is battling with his own government to prove he's an American.

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS Investigative Reporter Eric Rasmussen traveled to south Texas in search of answers for this man and others born under suspicion on the border.

For months, Rasmussen has been looking into why the U.S. Department of State is refusing to issue a passport to 30-year-old Mark Esqueda, from Minnesota, as well as hundreds of other U.S. citizens.

Despite having a U.S. birth certificate and even serving tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan with the Marines, government officials say Esqueda's citizenship is suspect.

Watch the investigation Thursday after the NFL draft on 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS to see Esqueda's plan for next steps in his fight to prove his citizenship.
