3 killed in shooting at Apple Valley home identified

The three people killed in a suspected double-murder suicide Saturday in Apple Valley were identified Wednesday afternoon.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office on Wednesday identified them as 23-year-old Jonathan Joseph Petrovich, 60-year-old Janice Lucille Petrovich and 27-year-old Alexander James Petrovich. The cause of death for Jonathan and Janice were listed as homicide, while the cause of death for Alexander was listed as suicide.

On Thursday, the department confirmed through a news release that investigators learned Alexander suffered from untreated mental health symptoms for most of his adult life. Police add those challenges likely contributed to the violence in the Petrovich home.

At about 12:18 p.m. Saturday, Apple Valley police responded to a home in the 13000 block of Upper Elkwood Court after a family friend reported finding three people dead in the home.

A search warrant application noted that the two men were brothers and the woman was their mother. The woman and one of the men were found with bullet wounds while the other man was found with what police called a likely self-inflicted gunshot wound.
