2 men charged in relation to killing of St. Paul grandmother

Christopher Malik Todd, 19, and Maurice June, 31, are each charged with one count of second-degree murder in the shooting death of 61-year-old grandmother Teresa Bearribs in St. Paul last Wednesday.

According to the criminal complaint, On Aug. 19 at 8:45 p.m. St. Paul officers responded to a residence in the 1100 block of Bush Street in St. Paul. The female caller indicated that her mother had been shot in the head.

When officers arrived to the scene, they discovered a woman who appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Medic arrived on scene and pronounced Bearribs dead.

During the investigation, the police spoke with the victim’s husband who said he was on the phone with Bearribs when she started saying, "What are you doing, why are you here?" before the call abruptly ended. The husband then called his daughter, who said her father called her and asked her to go check on her mother because the call went dead. The daughter also said that earlier in the week her boyfriend was shot and killed. She said her boyfriend was allegedly involved in some bad things. She believed that the people involved in her boyfriend’s death were actually trying to kill her, and when they could not find her, they shot her mother. The daughter identified a Maurice June, known as "Oso," as a leader in the criminal group.

June was interviewed by investigators after an arrest for a separate charge on Aug. 23. June gave several versions of what happened on Aug. 19. In his final version of events, June said that he drove himself and Todd to an alley on the 1100 block of Bush Street. There he let Todd out as Todd had stated he wanted to go talk to the victim’s daughter about the death of her boyfriend. June said he then heard a single shot and Todd ran back to the car saying he shot someone.

Todd was interviewed on Aug. 22 after being arrested on separate charges. Todd also gave multiple versions of what happened. In the final version of events, Todd stated that he, June and another passenger named "Marcus" drove to the alley on the 1100 block of Bush Street. Todd and "Marcus" got out of the vehicle and went to the back gate of the residence according to Todd. Todd heard one shot and took off running. He says Marcus shot Bearribs at the urging of June. Todd also expressed the belief that Bearribs’ daughter was involved in her boyfriend’s death and that she and others set up his murder.
