A teenager was found dead on Bemidji State's campus early Sunday morning.
According to the Bemidji Police Department, officers responded around 12:30 a.m. on a report of a person lying on the ground bleeding. Upon arrival, officers found an 18-year-old man who appeared to have been a victim of a fall from a high elevation. Officers, assisted by Bemidji State Public Safety Personnel, began to immediately provide life-saving efforts to the victim. However, they were unsuccessful.
More from KSTP:
Bemidji police detectives have identified the man as a visitor and not enrolled at the University. Detectives are working to identify witnesses and establish how the fall occurred. The victim was taken to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy. Police say alcohol played a role in the fall.
"It's terrible," Bemidji Police Captain David LaZella told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS. "It's very tragic. We've interviewed a fair amount of students, we interviewed witnesses, we've interviewed some people who reside off of campus this investigation is very much active. I want the kids to know they need to think about the choices that they are making, some of the things they are doing to remember how to be safe, stay safe and it's such a tragedy. It's overwhelming at times."
Students on campus tell 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS they would like more information into what exactly happened.
"Everyone is curious what happened because no one knows the full story," one student said. "Just kind of heartbreaking and sad."
Immediate family of the victim has been notified. The name of the victim is being withheld pending further notification and ongoing investigation.
