A 17-year-old boy died in a shooting that happened in Minneapolis Monday afternoon.
According to Minneapolis police, at 4:27 p.m., officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the area of the 3800 block of Fremont Avenue North.
Upon their arrival, police found two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the individuals did not have a pulse or respirations. Officers began CPR and wound management until paramedics arrived.
The 17-year-old victim was transported to North Memorial Health Hospital where he died a short time later. The other victim, an adult male in his late teens, was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center with injuries not considered to be life-threatening.
A preliminary investigation indicates that people were standing in front of a business when a person, or persons, approached on foot and shot at the group. Police said the suspect fled the scene prior to officers' arrival.
The scene was canvassed and the Minneapolis Police Department Crime Lab responded and documented the scene and collected evidence.
A spokesperson for Republican Lacy Johnson's campaign issued the following statement regarding the incident:
"We can confirm that the victims of this senseless violence were young, motivated members of the Lacy Johnson campaign outreach team. Today, we are shocked and saddened to learn of this senseless act of violence. It is shocking and unnecessary acts of violence like this that prove why change is more needed than ever in our community. The shooting did not occur during a campaign event or outreach, and we do not believe it has any connection to their work for the campaign."
The medical examiner will release the nature and cause of death of the victim in the coming days.
