1 Woman, 3 Girl Scouts Killed after Being Struck by Vehicle

Three girl scouts and one woman were killed in a hit-and-run incident just before noon near Eau Claire, Wisconsin Saturday. 

According to a press release from the Lake Hallie Police Department, the crash happened at 11:41 a.m. on County Road P at the State Highway 29 overpass. Officials say a Girl Scout Troop was picking up trash when a black Ford F150 left the roadway and struck multiple people in the ditch.

Three of them were Girl Scouts, and another was an adult woman. All four died as a result of the crash. Another juvenile female remains in critical condition. 

The driver originally fled the area but later turned himself in. He is identified as 21-year-old Colton Treu of Chippewa Falls. 

The investigation is ongoing at this time. 

The following was a statement provided by the Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes:

It is with profound sadness that we share the news of a tragic loss in our Girl Scout sisterhood. On Saturday, 3 Girl Scouts and 1 adult volunteer were killed while participating in a highway clean-up service project. Another Girl Scout remains in critical condition. Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes asks that you please keep the Nokomis Service Area volunteers and families in your thoughts and prayers as they grapple with this senseless loss. We will share information on how to support the families impacted and memorial service info as we learn more.

Another statement was provided from the Nokomis Service Area Girl Scouts regarding the incident: 

A tragic and senseless act that happened earlier today in Hallie involving a Halmstad Girl Scout troop has us all asking Why? Please keep these girls and their families in your thoughts and prayers. We will keep our sister troops, families and friends informed the best we can as information comes our way.
