A heat advisory has been declared for multiple Minnesota counties.

The National Weather Service says the following counties are under the advisory until 8 p.m. Friday: Anoka, Blue Earth, Brown, Carver, Chippewa, Chisago, Dakota, Hennepin, Isanti, Kanabec, Kandiyohi, Lac Qui Parle, Le Sueur, McLeod, Meeker, Nicollet, Ramsey, Redwood, Renville, Rice, Scott, Sherburne, Sibley, Washington, Watonwan, Wright and Yellow Medicine.

Additionally, Polk County in Wisconsin is also under the heat advisory until 8 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for many parts of northern Minnesota. The watch will be active until 1 a.m. Saturday.

KSTP meteorologist Jonathan Yuhas says thunderstorms are possible Friday evening in the Twin Cities after 10 p.m. into early Saturday morning. He adds that some storms have the potential to become severe, with high winds and large hail from Brainerd to Duluth and then moving toward northwest Wisconsin early Saturday.

A threat of hail and high winds will be mainly north of the Twin Cities, but some strong thunderstorms may also pass through the Twin Cities between midnight and 6 a.m. Saturday.

The weekend will consist of highs in the 90s. Yuhas says on Friday, the heat index is expected to be above 100 degrees in some areas.
