Excessive heat warning in effect for Twin Cities

The Twin Cities metro is under an excessive heat warning until 8 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service, the warning went into effect at 11 a.m. and continues until 8 p.m. for Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott and Washington counties.

A heat advisory also went into effect for much of south and central Minnesota.

The alert states that "dangerously hot conditions" are expected in the area, and the heat index could get up to 103 degrees. Extreme heat and humidity will exacerbate the potential for heat-related illness, especially for those who are working outdoors.

Anyone who works or spends time outside should take extra precautions and save strenuous work for the early morning and late evening hours. People are advised to wear lightweight clothing and drink plenty of water.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration urges that workers are aware of the symptoms of heatstroke and exhaustion and to call 911 in case of a medical emergency. Frequent rests in shaded or air-conditioned areas are recommended.
