An air quality alert is in effect until 9 p.m. Tuesday, covering the metro area and St. Cloud.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) issued the alert Tuesday afternoon, stating hot weather and light wind will "produce an environment favorable for emissions of nitrogen dioxide and volatile organic compounds that can quickly form ozone."

According to the MPCA, those with asthma or other breathing conditions—like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis, and emphysema—are most likely to be affected. The MPCA stated children and teenagers, as well as people who are doing extended or heavy physical activity, could also be affected.

The MPCA advises taking precautions such as limiting and/or postponing physical activity as well as avoiding areas where air pollution is heavier.
