Vikings update 53-man roster; Griffen, Dozier cut

On Tuesday, the Minnesota Vikings finalized their first 53-man roster of the 2021 season. 

Some notable names cut from the team include defensive end Everson Griffen, who was recently signed by the team. Running back Ameer Abdullah, offensive lineman Dakota Dozier, quarterback Jake Browning and long-snapper Andrew DePaola were also cut.

KSTP Sports hears that both Griffen and Abdullah could be added back onto the 53-man in the near future, with Dozier a candidate for the practice squad.

On offense, the team now consists of two quarterbacks (Kirk Cousins and Kellen Mond); three running backs (Dalvin Cook, Alexander Mattison and Kene Nwangwu); one fullback (C.J. Ham), six wide receivers (Adam Thielen, Justin Jefferson, Dede Westbrook, Ihmir Smith-Marsette, K.J. Osborn and Dan Chisena); three tight ends* (Irv Smith Jr., Tyler Conklin and Brandon Dillon); and nine offensive linemen (Garrett Bradbury, Blake Brandel, Ezra Cleveland, Mason Cole, Christian Darrisaw, Wyatt Davis, Rashod Hill, Brian O'Neill and Olisaemeka Udoh).

On defense, the team now consists of 10 defensive linemen (Jalyn Holmes, Danielle Hunter, Patrick Jones II, James Lynch, Michael Pierce, Sheldon Richardson, Dalvin Tomlinson, Armon Watts, Stephen Weatherly and D.J. Wonnum); seven linebackers (Anthony Barr, Ryan Connelly Troy Dye, Blake Lynch, Eric Kendricks, Chazz Surratt and Nick Vigil); 10 defensive backs (Mackensie Alexander, Kris Boyd, Bashaud Breeland, Camryn Bynum, Cameron Dantzler, Harrison Hand, Josh Metellus, Patrick Peterson, Harrison Smith and Xavier Woods); and two special teams players (kicker Greg Joseph and punter Britton Colquitt).

*The Vikings traded for tight end Chris Herndon on Tuesday. There will likely be another roster move made in accordance to this move.
