Hopkins-grad Paige Bueckers won the ESPY for Best Women’s College Athlete and used her acceptance speech to shine light on gender and racial disparities in sports.

Bueckers earned the award for her record-shattering freshman season at the University of Connecticut that saw her smash multiple record for the powerhouse program.

Several of the records Bueckers broke were held by former Minnesota Lynx superstar Maya Moore, who was also took the stage at the ESPYs Saturday night to accept the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage.

The award winners were honored Saturday at The Rooftop at Pier 17 at the Seaport in New York City.

Bueckers beat out fellow nominees Madison Lilley of Kentucky volleyball, Florida State soccer player Jaelin Howell and Jame Madison softball standout Odicci Alexander.

Bueckers spoke with ESPN interviewers after the ceremony about her decision to tackle the issues she focused on in her speech.
