A third period rally by the No. 4 Gopher men’s hockey program came up just short on Saturday night as Minnesota lost to No. 5 Minnesota Duluth 2-1 at AMSOIL Arena.

Minnesota surrendered a pair of goals in the opening frame to Minnesota Duluth with Tanner Laderoute and Blake Biondi tallying for the Bulldogs.

But the Gophers turned up the pressure in the final 40 minutes – outshooting the hosts 20-15 in the final two periods and 29-26 on the night. The pressure paid off in the third as Mason Nevers tipped in a shot from the point to draw Minnesota within a goal. The sophomore’s third of the year came off assists from Ryan Johnson and Ben Meyers.

A late rush by the Maroon & Gold couldn’t produce the equalizer as Minnesota Duluth held on for the win.

Jack LaFontaine (3-3-0) made 24 saves on 26 shots while Ryan Fanti stopped 28 of 29. Minnesota was 2-for-2 on the penalty kill and 0-for-3 on the power play.
