Twins DFA Joe Smith, activate Thielbar, Leon

A day after making a flurry of trades, the Minnesota Twins have made a few additional roster moves.

The team reinstated left-handed pitcher Caleb Thielbar from the 15-day injured list and selected the contract of catcher Sandy Leon, who was acquired in a trade with Cleveland on Tuesday.

Leon will become Minnesota’s backup catcher, taking over for Caleb Hamilton, who was optioned back to Triple-A St. Paul.

To make room for Thielbar, the Twins designated relief pitcher Joe Smith for release or assignment.

Smith, 38, was signed to a one-year deal by the Twins in March.

After starting the season strong, Smith has struggled, posting a 4.61 ERA across 27.1 innings this season, but an 11.12 ERA with just four strikeouts over his past seven appearances.

Thielbar has missed the team’s last nine games due to a left hamstring strain. He leads the Twins with 40 relief appearances this year, recording a 4.84 ERA with 47 strikeouts across 35.1 innings.
