After a 5-4 season in 2021 and a first round playoff loss, the Prior Lake Lakers are uber-motivated to do a lot better this year.

We attended a recent Prior Lake practice and spoke with 16th-year head coach Matt Gegenheimer.

Prior Lake’s schedule is challenging, like all years, with perennial power Eden Prairie on the road Sept. 30 and defending Class 6A state champion Lakeville South at home Oct. 7.

The Lakers open the season at home next Thursday vs. Hopkins.

Prior Lake is led by Gophers commitments and seniors Greg Johnson and Martin Owusu.

Owusu, a three-sport athlete who also excels in wrestling and track, plays defensive end. He’s expected to transition to defensive tackle for the Gophers. He also had offers from Iowa State, Kansas State, California, and others.

Johnson is Prior Lake’s left tackle, but is expected to shift inside to guard for the Gophers. He also had an offer from Iowa State.
