Ibrahim, Schmitz headline 7 Gophers offensive players honored by Big Ten

A day after 11 University of Minnesota football players earned recognition for their play on defense and special teams this season, seven more have been honored for their play on offense.

The Gophers honorees were led by standout running back Mohamed Ibrahim and center John Michael Schmitz, who were both named First Team All-Big Ten by coaches and media. It’s the third time in the past four years the Gophers have had multiple players named to the First Team.

Ibrahim also was named to the First Team in 2020 and joins Laurence Maroney and Bob McNamara as the only running backs in school history to be named to the First Team more than once.

Schmitz anchored Minnesota’s offensive line and became the first Gophers center to be named to the First Team since Greg Eslinger from 2003-05.

The other four starting offensive linemen were also honored by the conference, with Axel Ruschmeyer voted to the Third Team by coaches and media, Chuck Filiaga named to the Third Team by coaches and an honorable mention by media, and Quinn Carroll and Aireontae Ersery both recognized as honorable mentions.

Additionally, tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford was named an honorable mention by coaches and media.
