University of Minnesota defensive coordinator Joe Rossi is one of 59 coaches nominated for the 2021 Broyles Award, which is presented each year to the top assistant coach in college football.

The Gophers are 24-12 with Rossi as defensive coordinator and have excelled defensively again this season. In 2021, the Gophers are allowing 296.7 yards per game (seventh in the nation), 19.2 points per game (tied for 16th in the nation), 99.9 rushing yards per game (ninth in the nation) and 196.8 passing yards per game (27th in the nation).

According to the university, the last time Minnesota allowed less than 20 points per game in a season is 1999, and the program hasn't allowed under 300 yards per game in a season since 1977.

A 43-member selection committee of former coaches, broadcasters and a committee representing the Football Writers Association of America will select 15 semi-finalists, five finalists and the winner.
