State Girls Hockey: Andover surges in third to earn 3rd straight AA Final appearance

The number one seeded Andover Huskies continued their undefeated season on Friday night at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul when they defeated Gentry Academy 5-1 to advance to the Class AA Championship game on Saturday.

A power-play goal by freshman Maya Engler put Andover on the board at 11:42 in the 1st period.  Engler was assisted by sophomore Cailin Mumm and junior Isa Goettl.  With 57 seconds left in the first period, Gentry Academy’s junior Janessa Gazdik scored with an assist from Julianna Gazdik on a power play.  

The 2nd period ended tied at 1-1.  Andover had eight shots on goal and Gentry Academy had 3.  The Huskies put up 22 shots to the Stars 10.   

After a scoreless 2nd period, Andover scored three goals in 50 seconds. Scoring at 1:38 on a power play was sophomore Nora Sauer, assisted by freshman Mackenzie Jones. At the two-minute mark junior Madison Jones scored, assisted by senior Emma Heath and junior Ella Boerger. Twenty-eight seconds later Heath scored, assisted by Boerger to take the lead to three for the Huskie. 

At 9:36 freshman Hannah Christenson scored her first goal of the tournament, assisted by Sauer and senior Ashley Grabau. Andover ended the period with 22 shots and 12 shots on goal.  

The Stars will play Edina in the 3rd place game at 11:00 am on Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Andover will take on the Skippers of Minnetonka at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday in the Class AA Championship game to bring the 2022 Girls Hockey State Tournament to a close.
