The Lakeville South Cougars will be under the direction of last year’s interim head coach Ben Burk. Following the Cougars 6A semifinal playoff appearance last season, they will be looking to build on that success.

KSTP Sports was at recent Lakeville South practice, as they get ready to open their season on October 9 vs. Burnsville.

South is led by senior tackle/tight end Riley Mahlmam, who is Minnesota’s No. 1 recruit in the 2021 Class. Mahlman has already committed to play his college football at the University of Wisconsin. On defense, senior Cade Ahrenholz is their star linebacker. Ahrenholz has multiple college football offers, but has chosen to play college hockey at Colorado College.

Burk was named the interim head coach in the middle of last season. He then led the Cougars to the 6A semifinals of the state football tournament, only to lose to eventual champion Wayzata. This will be Burk’s first head coaching position. He has served as the Offensive Coordinator for the Cougars since 2017 and led an attack that set school records for rushing yards in each of his two full seasons as the play-caller.
