Chisago Lakes girls hockey wins Section 5A in thrilling OT finish

The Chisago Lakes Wildcats defeated the Orono Spartans 3-2 in overtime to win the Section 5A Championship and head to the State Tournament.

Orono started things off when junior Mia Lopez assisted freshman Grace Bickett for the Spartan power-play goal to make it 1-0 with 6:22 left in the first period.

In the second period, on another power-play, Bickett assisted junior Iyla Ryskamp for another Orono goal to make it 2-0 with 10:33 left in the period. Later in the second, Chisago Lakes got on the board when junior Dani Brunette assisted senior Jenna Lawry for the Wildcats goal, making it 2-1 with 30.8 left in the period.

In the third period, Lawry hit junior Dani Burgen for the game-tying goal, making it 2-2 with 9:17 left in the game.

There were multiple chances for both teams the remaining nine-plus minutes, but the game went to overtime.

In overtime, senior Dylan Grilz hit Brunette for the game-winning goal, with just 12.3 seconds left in overtime, for the Chisago Lakes 3-2 victory, the Section 5A Championship, and a trip to the State Tournament.
