Boys State Basketball: Wayzata takes down Duluth East

The Wayzata Trojans defeated the Duluth East Greyhounds 78-69, Wednesday evening at Osseo High School, in a Class AAAA quarterfinal matchup.

The first half was a high-scoring, tightly contested battle. Greyhound senior center Noah Paulson hit a layup to put Duluth East up 21-19 with 8:57 left in the half. It was answered by a Cam Heide jumper for Wayzata, but then Paulson continued dominating the inside for the Greyhounds and score two straight paint buckets. 

Duluth East would lead 42-36 at halftime, with Paulson having 14 first-half points for the Greyhounds. Senior guard Eddie Beeninga led Wayzata with nine points at the break, while Heide added eight points. 

In the second half, the Trojans came out on fire, starting the half on a 11-0 run, capped off by a Beeninga three-pointer, following a three-point play, putting Wayzata up 47-42 with 15:25 remaining in the game. Overall, the Trojans opened up the second half on an 18-2 run to make it a 54-44 score with 13:39 left in the game. 

The Greyhounds did not quit. After a Mattie Thompson bucket, Duluth was back with five with 11 minutes to go in the game. 

Beeninga would step up when Wayzata needed it. He hit a driving layup to extend the Trojan lead with under six minutes left. He then hit a driving layup to put Wayzata up 70-59 with just over three minutes left in the game and effectively icing the game. 

Heide would finish with 15 points, junior forward Carter Bjerke finished with 14 points for the Trojans. Beeninga finished with 26 points to lead Wayzata. 

Wayzata will play the winner of Owatonna vs. Shakopee in a Class AAAA semifinals at the Target Center.
