Woman charged with murdering boyfriend in Minneapolis

A woman was charged Tuesday with murdering her boyfriend in Minneapolis.

According to Minneapolis Police, 37-year-old Vivian Jean Jones is charged with second-degree murder.

Friday night, officers responded to a reported suicide in the 4000 block of Humboldt Avenue at about 7:50 p.m. There, officers found a 41-year-old man dead from a gunshot wound behind his right ear.

Police said Jones told officers the man shot himself but she didn’t know where the gun was.

A criminal complaint states Jones told officers she’d gotten into a fight with the victim earlier in the day because he crashed her car so she locked him out of the house. However, the victim forcefully entered the house.

Jones said she went into a bedroom and the victim followed her while holding the gun to his head saying he was "tired" and had "nothing left." She added that she grabbed the magazine from the gun but the victim still shot himself. She also said she "could’ve" placed the gun in the nightstand where it was later found.

Officers noticed some inconsistencies as they talked to Jones, police said.

The medical examiner’s staff noted the victim had a gunshot wound to the back of his upper thigh, and a neighbor told police they saw the victim walking outside when the crack of a gunshot was heard, followed by the victim limping back toward the house, the complaint states.

Police then took Jones into custody for questioning before booking her in jail on probable cause murder.

She later told investigators she did shoot the victim in the thigh and said she was "sorry for lying." She also admitted the gun belonged to her.

Jones remains in the Hennepin County Adult Detention Center on $1 million bail. Her first court appearance is set for Wednesday afternoon.

The complaint notes Jones was charged with attempted murder and first-degree assault in 2006 for shooting a woman. She later served five years in prison after pleading guilty to the assault charge.
