Red Lake Nation police officer killed on duty, 1 in custody

A Red Lake Nation police officer died while on duty Tuesday morning.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Minneapolis division reported Tuesday afternoon that agents were investigating a shooting earlier on the reservation.

The FBI reported Red Lake Nation officers were responding to a call at a residence when a person fired a weapon, killing the officer, 37-year-old Ryan Bialke.

Bialke was a six-year veteran of the Red Lake Police Department. He is survived by his wife and four children.

One person is in custody in connection with the shooting. The suspect’s identity has not yet been revealed as of Tuesday afternoon.

The incident remains under investigation.

In a social media post, the Red Lake Tribunal Council stated all tribal programs and businesses have been directed to lower flags to half-staff this week. Non-essential tribal programs will also not be held Tuesday.

"Sincere condolences to family and friends," the statement read. "Prayers and strength to the Red Lake Nation during this difficult time."
