UPDATE: The Polk County Sheriff's Office has identified the victim as 69-year-old Dennis Schuebel, of rural Amery, Wis.

A man was struck by a vehicle and killed Saturday morning in Polk County after he stopped to pick up a piece of metal lying in the road.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a reported crash involving a pedestrian on U.S. Highway 8, just east of the Highway 46 North junction, at 11:03 a.m.

Upon their arrival, deputies found good Samaritans and emergency personnel helping the victim. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation indicates the man had been driving west on Highway 8 before he stopped his vehicle on the north shoulder, got out of the vehicle and entered the travel lane to pick up a piece of metal on the road. The victim then entered the eastbound lane and was struck by a vehicle.

The sheriff's office said the involved vehicle stopped after hitting the man.

The incident is still under investigation.

The victim's name will be released at a later time.
