Mall of America will host a series of blood drives for the American Red Cross starting next week.

MOA said Tuesday that it will open the North Atrium space for the blood drives beginning April 7. However, the mall will remain closed for shopping.

The mall said anyone wanting to give blood will be asked to make an appointment to help manage donor flow and adhere to social distancing guidelines. Appointments can be made at or through the Red Cross Blood app using the sponsor code "MOA."

To ensure the health of staff and donors, precautions taken will include:

  • Checking temperatures of staff and donors before entering the drive,
  • Providing hand sanitizer for use before and throughout the donation process,
  • Following social distancing between donors at entry, donation and refreshment areas,
  • Routinely disinfecting surfaces and equipment,
  • Wearing and frequently changing gloves,
  • Using sterile collection sets and an aseptic scrub for every donation.

The drives will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 7, 8, 17 and 18.

Officials have stressed the need for blood donations over the past several weeks.

MOA closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic on March 17. It's still unclear when it might reopen.
