The cities of Edina and Rochester as well as the University of Minnesota will soon be requiring people to wear face masks to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

In Edina, the city council decided during a special meeting Monday night to move forward with a policy requiring face masks in all city facilities and indoor public places where it's tough to social distance. The requirement goes into effect July 6.

According to Edina's policy, masks are not required at city recreational facilities such as Braemar Arena and Edinborough Park, where social distancing can take place. Masks are also not required for those under the age of 5, those with medical conditions that make it hard for them to breathe, those who are deaf or hard of hearing as well as those who care for those individuals, and those who are unable to remove a mask without assistance.

Also Monday night, Rochester's city council approved a move by the mayor to require face masks in city buildings.
