A child was critically wounded in a shooting Friday afternoon in north Minneapolis.

According to officials, the shooting happened in the area of North 34th and Morgan avenues.

"Shortly after 2 p.m. today, a vehicle arrived at North Memorial Medical Center with a gunshot victim inside of the vehicle. The individual that was shot is a child and that child was brought into a hospital where he is in grave condition," Minneapolis police spokesman John Elder said.

The child was inside of a car when they were shot multiple times, according to Elder.

Mac Braxton, with the neighborhood counseling group We Push for Peace, said a witness told him about two cars that spotted each other. People inside one car tried to shoot at the other, and the child, who was sitting in a parked car nearby, was hit.

“It’s senseless, it’s senseless," Braxton said. "It comes at a time — it’s time for change.”

Sarah Anderson, who lives in the neighborhood, said she heard 10 to 20 gunshots will she was sitting on her couch at home.

"It was very loud and very scary," she said. "It's devastating to hear that a child in the area has been shot right near my house, and it's always terrifying hearing gunshots."

The shooting comes amid a rise in violent crime in Minneapolis.

Police records show through April of last year, there were 12 homicides and 1,324 violent crimes in Minneapolis. During the same period, there have been twice as many homicides and 1,388 violent crimes.

Braxton said it has to stop, especially when children's lives are at stake.

"You know the saying it takes a village to raise a child? It takes a community to raise a child,” Braxton said.
