The Cass County Sheriff’s Office said it received a report of a crash at a home in Gould Township, in rural Federal Dam, at 3:17 p.m.

First responders arrived at the scene and learned that a 35-year-old woman and a 6-year-old girl had been on a 2004 Ski-Doo snowmobile in their yard when it struck a stump, launching them down an embankment to Leech Lake and into a tree.

CPR was attempted but the 6-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 35-year-old woman was taken to a hospital by ambulance with unspecified injuries.

An investigation is ongoing.
