Regions Hospital is looking to grow about 25 percent by 2040 to keep up with demand spurred by an aging population with increasingly complex diseases.

In a proposal submitted to the Minnesota Department of Health, the hospital says it would like to increase licensed bed capacity by 100 to meet growing demand and add more than 950 full-time employees.

The hospital currently has 450 beds and employs about 4,100 people.

"Simply stated, we have exhausted our supply of available beds," the proposal reads. "Without new ones, we will no longer be able to meet the significant, sustained and growing demand for care in the east metro."

The hospital says it plans to ask the State Legislature for an exception to a moratorium on the issuance of permits of a hospital license with increased capacity.
