Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, fewer people are on the road during the morning and evening commutes.

Lighter traffic patterns started during the governor’s stay at home order back in March.

Because of this, drivers are using the MnPASS Express Lanes less.

According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, there were an estimated 258,000 daily trips on MnPASS Express Lanes prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. That number is now down to about 36,000 trips.

MnDOT reported the monthly toll revenue on MnPASS lanes was roughly $431,000 a month. Because of lighter traffic, that is down to $14,000 a month.

MnDOT officials say the revenue from MnPASS lanes is usually spent on improvement projects. Those officials said even with revenue down, the state shouldn’t have to put any projects on hold.
