Argument in Whittier neighborhood of Minneapolis escalates into deadly shooting

Police say a man was killed in a shooting Monday afternoon in the Whittier neighborhood of south Minneapolis.

According to Minneapolis Police Department spokesman Officer Garrett Parten, officers were called to a report of a shooting just after 1 p.m. near the intersection of 26th Street East and Stevens Avenue.

Investigators say four people who knew each other got into an argument when at least two people in the group pulled out guns. The fight escalated to gunfire and the victim, a man believed to be in his 30s, was shot.

Officers arriving at the scene found the victim with life-threatening injuries and gave him first aid. Medics rushed him to the hospital but he did not survive, Parten said.

As of Monday afternoon, police are still investigating how many weapons were fired and by whom. Parten would not say whether any arrests had been made.

This marks the city’s 44th homicide of 2022, according to MPD crime data.
