Authorities identify man killed during weekend Minneapolis crash

UPDATE 12/13/22: Authorities have identified the man who died at the scene of a North Minneapolis crash this past weekend.

According to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s office, 22-year-old Josiah Robert Oakley was killed after two vehicles crashed at the intersection of North 42nd and Lyndale avenues shortly after midnight Sunday morning.

Minneapolis police reported at the time one vehicle was traveling at an unspecified “high rate of speed” when it entered the intersection and then hit a southbound vehicle traveling on Lyndale. Officers also said one man died at the scene, and the driver of the striking vehicle was hospitalized for “potentially life-threatening injuries.”

Tuesday, Minneapolis police identified the second driver as 39-year-old Sylvester Terell Vaughn. Officers didn’t have an update on Vaughn’s injuries or condition.

The Medical Examiner’s Office said Oakley died from multiple blunt force injuries due to the crash.

INITIAL REPORT 12/11/22: One man is dead and another person is in the hospital with critical injuries after a two-vehicle crash early Sunday morning in Minneapolis’ Camden community, according to the Minneapolis Police Department.

Officers went to the intersection of North 42nd and Lyndale avenues shortly after midnight Sunday for a report of a crash. At the scene, officers found two vehicles and two drivers.

Early police information indicates one vehicle was traveling at an unspecified “high rate of speed” when it entered the intersection and hit a vehicle that was going south on Lyndale Avenue.

Police say the man whose vehicle was hit died at the scene. The driver of the striking vehicle was taken to the hospital with what police call “potentially life-threatening” injuries.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner will identify the man who died. Police say no information is currently available about the person in the hospital.

No one has been arrested, and police are investigating the details surrounding the crash. Check back for updates.
