Suspect in stolen vehicle crashes into squad cars before high-speed chase on I-494

A man is in custody after he crashed a stolen pickup truck into squad cars and led officers on a high-speed chase Sunday morning in Bloomington, police said.

According to the Bloomington Police Department, around 5 a.m., officers responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle found a pickup truck with a plow attachment parked in a business lot on the 6500 block of Cecilia Circle. A person who appeared to be passed out was inside.

The vehicle matched the description of a pickup that was reported stolen from Brooklyn Park. When the driver woke up, he fled from officers, hitting squad cars on the way out of the parking lot, police said.

Officers followed the suspect as he got onto Interstate 494 and headed east, reaching speeds upwards of 90 mph, according to police. Assisting agencies deployed stop sticks on I-494 to disable the suspect vehicle’s tires, and the chase came to an end after a Bloomington squad car performed a PIT maneuver, causing the car to get stuck in the snow at the Dodd Road exit in Eagan.

Police say the driver then appeared to hold a handgun to his head. Officers began negotiating with the suspect, and they were eventually able to get him to leave the pickup and take him into custody. Police found a gun inside the vehicle.

The suspect was booked at the Bloomington Police Department on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle and fleeing police in a motor vehicle.
