Thursday declared ‘Harriet Tubman Bicentennial Day’ in Minnesota

Thursday has been declared “Harriet Tubman Bicentennial Day” in Minnesota.

Although Tubman’s exact birth date is unknown, Gov. Tim Walz issued the proclamation in observance of Tubman’s 200th birthday “to honor her legacy and commitment to freedom and rededicate ourselves to the timeless principles she upheld.”

A former slave, abolitionist and Underground Railroad “conductor,” Tubman was known for her efforts to help many escape slavery in the South in the 1800s.

Tubman died in Auburn, New York on March 9, 1913. She was in her 90s.
